The cardiovascular system comprises of the heart and the blood vessels that carry the blood around the human body. These blood vessels supply all organs, including the eyes. The retina, which is located at the back of the eyes has a network of vessels that can be viewed non-invasively. This non-invasive procedure can be carried out by an optometrist who simply takes a Digital Retinal Photograph which is then analysed to calculate the wellness score.
The wellness score is an indicator of health of the cardiovascular system from retinal vessel measurements. As health deteriorates, arteries get narrower while veins get wider, resulting in a change in ratio. If this ratio is greater than 0.6, it is likely that the cardiovascular system is in good health, if however, the score is lower than 0.6, it is advised to seek medical attention.
